This means delisting its shares from the stock exchanges where the shares are traded (Nasdaq and Toronto), and become a privately held stock. From reading the media it is to be bought by a consortium led by Fairfax Financial for $4.7bn (<strong>\u00a33bn<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>So while the shares are still listed on the Nasdaq and Toronto stock exchanges, I undertook some analysis into the stock<\/p>\n<p>[<a title=\"Blackberry Stock\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/symbol\/bbry\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/symbol\/bbry<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Today about $8 a share, 12 months ago $18 a share. Over <strong>50% decline<\/strong> in value.<\/p>\n<p>The Market capitalisation is $4,623,089 = \u00a32883 Million = <strong>\u00a32.8 Billion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The annual report gives some insight too.<\/p>\n<p>[<a title=\"Blackberry Annual Report\" href=\"http:\/\/uk.blackberry.com\/company\/investors\/documents.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/uk.blackberry.com\/company\/investors\/documents.html<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>524,159,844 Common Shares in issue.<br \/>\n<strong>54.6%<\/strong> of BlackBerry users based <strong>outside of North America<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Revenue<\/strong> (U.S $) <strong>March 2, 2013<\/strong> = $11,073 million = <strong>\u00a36,905 million<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Revenue<\/strong> (U.S $) <strong>March 2, 2012<\/strong> = $18,423 million = <strong>\u00a311,489 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A near <strong>40% decline<\/strong> in revenues.<\/p>\n<p>The Company\u2019s revenues by geographic region are as follows:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>6% = Canada<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>20.2% = USA<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>11.2% = UK<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>29.5% = Europe<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>19.1% = LatAm<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>14% = APAC<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite increased competitive pressures in consumer segments, the Company remains a leader in enterprise mobility, with deployments in over <strong>90%<\/strong> of the <strong>Fortune 500<\/strong> <strong>companies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As of March 2, 2013, the Company\u2019s research and development team consisted of approximately <strong>6,000 full time employees<\/strong>. Research and development expense was approximately <strong>$1.5 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As of March 2, 2013, the Company had approximately <strong>12,700 full-time employees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cash and cash equivalents<\/strong> on the balance sheet of\u00a0 $ 1,549 Million = <strong>\u00a3966 Million<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Short-term investments<\/strong> $1,105 Million = <strong>\u00a3689 Million<\/strong><br \/>\nIt&#8217;s <strong>debt is tiny<\/strong>,\u00a0it is\u00a0<strong>only accounts payable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advertising expense<\/strong>, which includes media, agency and promotional expenses totalling $925 million = <strong>\u00a3576 Million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that jumps out, the very low level of debt that Blackberry carries. So despite the falling sales, and shrinking market share, the company has been able to develop new products, as it has not had the burden of loans, interest payments etc, when it has had to deal with the competition from Apple and Android.
